In this presentation, “Design and Analysis of MEMS-based direct methanol fuel cell,” there are three main model parts, two-dimensional two-phase mass transport model, μdmfc three-dimensional model and a novel cathode model. First, a two-dimensional two-phase mass transport model was established. In this model, the process of gas-liquid transfer and electrochemical reaction within the μDMFC were analyzed using COMSOL. Second, to resolve problems of low efficiency in mass transport and water flooding existing in the traditional perforated air-breathing cathode, a novel spoked cathode structure was proposed, with emphasis on distributions of oxygen concentration, current density, pressure, temperature and liquid saturation, components transfer and electrochemical reaction were investigated. Simulation results show that the new configuration shows better performance than the conventional perforated cathodic unit. There are also some simulations were presented in this presentation.
