Numerical Simulation of RTD in Contact Tanks with COMSOL Multiphysics

C. Gualtieri
University of Napoli

The objective of this paper is to present the results of a numerical study undertaken to investigate the hydrodynamics and turbulent transport and mixing inside two contact tanks, which have the same channels but different location of the baffles. Transient concentration data were used to derive the residence time distribution (RTD) function for both tanks in order to evaluate and compare ...

Transient Heat Conduction in Solids Irradiated by a Moving Heat Source

N.Bianco, O.Manca, S. Nardini, and S. Tamburrino
Università degli Studi di Napoli, Italy

Transient three-dimensional temperature distribution in a solid, irradiated by a moving Gaussian laser beam, was investigated numerically by means of COMSOL Multiphysics. Convection and radiation from the work-piece surfaces as well as variable thermophysical properties are accounted for.

Multiphysics Investigation of Thermo-optic Effects in Silicon-on-Insulator Waveguide Arrays

F. Magno, F. Dell’Olio, and V.M.N. Passaro
Politecnico di Bari

A theoretical investigation of thermo-optic effect in Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) rib waveguides and waveguide arrays by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM) has been carried out. Both static and dynamic analyses have been performed.

Silicon-on-Insulator MOS Optical Modulators

F. Dell’Olio, F. De Leonardis, and V.M.N. Passaro
Politecnico di Bari

One of the most important requirements of any integrated optical technology is the ability to perform optical modulation, which permits to encode a bit stream onto the optical carrier provided by the laser source. In this paper a multiphysics model for silicon modulators adopting a Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) structure is presented.

Structural Acoustic Modeling and PML's in COMSOL Multiphysics

M. Zampolli
NATO Undersea Research Centre, La spezia

In water we can’t see far, because light and electromagnetic waves are absorbed over relatively short distances. In contrast, sound travels very well in water In fact it is well known that marine mammals rely on sound for communication over large distances, and some of them even use sound to locate their target while hunting. In this presentation we provide an overview of the principles of ...

Diffusion Processes in the Human Brain using COMSOL Multiphysics

C. Cherubini[1,2], S. Filippi[1,2], and A. Gizzi[1]
[1] Università Campus Biomedico di Roma
[2] University of Rome

This article discusses the RMN import of a brain geometry in COMSOL Multiphysics via an interpolating function. The physical property associated with the grayscale is the diffusivity tensor, assumed here to be isotropic but inhomogeneous. Applications to anti-tumor drug delivery and cancer growth processes are discussed.

Design of Electro-Optic Bragg Amplitude Modulators

A. Secchi[1], V. Foglietti[1], E. Cianci[1], L. Pierno[2], and M. Dispenza[2]
[1] CNR-IFN, Italy
[2] SELEX-SI, Italy

The subject of this work is the design of a LiNbO3 electro-optic tuned Bragg filter to be used as an amplitude modulator. We analyze in detail the realized waveguide and simulate the grating, developing a fabrication methodology for building the Bragg modulator by niobate core etching. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the modulator, using the finite element method analysis.

Cyclic Voltammetry Simulation at Microelectrode Arrays

A. Lavacchi, U. Bardi, S. Caporali, A. Fossati, and I. Perissi
University of Firenze

In the present paper we report the results obtained applying COMSOL Multiphysics to the numerical simulation of Cyclic Voltammetries (CV’s) at microelecrodes arrays. CV’s at inlaid micro disk electrode arrays have been simulated showing how the electrochemical response is affected by geometrical parameters such as the electrode radius and the distance among the electrode canters.

Nonlinear Magnetic Analysis of Multi-plate Magnetorheological Brakes and Clutches

M. Benetti, and E. Dragoni
University of Modena and Reggio Emilia

This paper deals with the nonlinear magnetic analysis of a 100 Nm, multi-disc, magnetorheological fluid rotary brake or clutch, carried out with COMSOL Multiphysics. Along with the results of the analysis, the paper presents merits and limitations found in the use of the software and introduces current efforts to include in future simulations the thermal and the mechanical responses of the ...

Multiphysics Models of Biological Systems

S. Filippi[1,2], and C. Cherubini[1,2]
[1] Facoltà di Ingegneria Università Campus Biomedico di Roma
[2] International Center for Relativistic Astrophysics, University of Rome

This article presents different applications of COMSOL Multiphysics in the context of the mathematical modeling of biological systems. Simulations of excitable media like cardiac and neural tissues are discussed. --------------------------------- Keynote speaker's biography: Simonetta Filippi is member of the Engineering Faculty at the University Campus Biomedico and of the ...
