If you are looking to learn how to model batteries with the COMSOL Multiphysics software, this is the course for you. During the 1-day Battery Modeling course, we will introduce the theory and applications of modeling batteries in COMSOL Multiphysics. We will describe the coupling between electric potential in the electrode, electrolyte, and electrode kinetics in detail, together with the ability to combine multiple electrode reactions on one electrode. We will also investigate the effects of chemical species transport on the electrochemical reaction kinetics.

In a mix of theory and hands-on training exercises, we will show you how to account for ohmic, activation, and concentration overpotential. You will learn how simulation can predict the effects of electrode geometry, catalytic activity, material properties, and operating conditions on the performance of electrochemical cells.

  • Introduction to generic electrochemistry modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics
  • Multiphysics aspects:
    • Charge transfer
    • Mass transfer
    • Heat transfer reactions in porous electrodes
  • Battery modeling:
    • Simulation of charge and discharge cycles
    • Thermal management

The course will focus mostly on lithium-ion batteries, but other battery chemistry, such as lead-acid and nickel-metal hydrides, may also be included.

Suggested Background

This course assumes familiarity with the fundamentals of electrochemistry. We strongly recommend that those new to COMSOL Multiphysics try out the software before the course.
