Modeling of Wires, Surfaces, and Solids with Boundary-Element-Based Electrostatics

These examples demonstrate using the *Electrostatics, Boundary Elements* interface, introduced in version 5.3 of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software. In the blog post associated with these files, "[How to Create Electrostatics Models with Wires, Surfaces, and Solids](/blogs/how-to-create-electrostatics-models-with-wires-surfaces-and-solids/)", we demonstrate the pros and cons of using the boundary ...

Axial Homopolar Induction Bearing in 3D

This model illustrates the working principle of an axial homopolar induction bearing. An electrically conducting rotor rotating in a magnetic field produced by a permanent magnets induces eddy currents on the conducting rotor. The eddy currents, in turn, produce a magnetic field that opposes the magnetic fields by the magnets and induces a force that opposes the motion of the rotor. The axial ...

Jet Pipe

This example models the radiation of fan noise from the annular duct of a turbofan aeroengine. When the jet stream exits the duct, a vortex sheet appears along the extension of the duct wall due to the surrounding air moving at a lower speed. The near field on both sides of the vortex sheet is calculated. The linearized Potential Flow physics interface in the Acoustics Module describes acoustic ...

Convective Cooling of a Potcore Inductor

The inductor is a common component in a variety of electrical devices. Its applications include power transformation and measurements, and it can also be used together with capacitors to create oscillators. In small devices with many components, such as in laptops, heat generation can be a problem and must be accounted for in the design. This axi-symmetric model studies the heat transfer in ...

Spring Loaded Centrifugal Governor

A centrifugal governor is used to control the speed of rotating machinery. One of the most common applications is in controlling the RPM of an engine by regulating the fuel supply. This model illustrates the functioning of a spring loaded centrifugal governor. The dynamics of the governor are analyzed under the influence of a centrifugal force, spring force, and damping force. The sleeve ...

Winding Designer for Electrical Machines

You can use this simulation app as a guide on how to automate selections using the Application Builder. In the example app, the selection algorithm depends on the relationship between the electrical and mechanical angles, which are generally used in the design of windings in electrical machines. Get more details in our blog post: [How to Automate Winding Design in Electrical Machines with an ...

Elastoacoustic Effect in Rail Steel

The elastoacoustic effect is a change in the speed of elastic waves that propagate in a structure undergoing static elastic deformations. The effect is used in many ultrasonic techniques for nondestructive testing of prestressed states within structures. This example studies the elastoacoustic effect in steels typically used in railroad rails. The analysis is based on the Murnaghan hyperelastic ...

Edge Effects In a Spirally Wound Lithium-Ion Battery

Due to the large differences in length scales in a lithium-ion battery, with the thickness of the different layers typically being several orders of magnitude smaller than the extension in the sheet direction, a lithium-ion battery is often well represented by a one-dimensional model. However, the packing and stacking of the battery may cause edge effects which motivate modeling in higher ...

Ion Drift Velocity Benchmark

The drift velocity of Ar+ is calculated using a Monte Carlo simulation in which the elastic collisions of Argon ions with ambient neutrals are explicitly modeled. The model uses energy-dependent collision cross-section data from experiment. The average ion velocity values are consistent with experimental data over a wide range of reduced electric field magnitudes. This agreement suggests that ...

Vdara® Caustic Surface

When the Vdara hotel first opened in Las Vegas, visitors relaxing by the pool would experience intense periods of heat at certain times of the day, at certain times of the year. This intense heat was caused by the reflection of solar radiation from the curved, reflective surface on the South-facing side of the hotel. This model shows how a caustic surface is generated in the pool area around the ...
