Opaque surfaces

I am trying to model radiation between two walls with a radiation shield between. I have defined the two walls as opaque domains, and the two air gaps on the left and right sides of the shield transparent, but I am not able to define the shield (which is just a boundary, with no thickness) as an opaque surface. Why is that?
