Basics of Frequency Domain Analysis in Structural Mechanics
In the final part of this introductory course on structural mechanics modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics®, we cover how to perform a frequency domain analysis. We begin with providing an introduction before completing a model build where we demonstrate conducting a few of the different study types available for this type of analysis.
Discussion: Frequency Domain Analysis
When performing a frequency domain analysis in COMSOL Multiphysics, we study the linear response of a structure to a harmonic excitation. Here we begin with an overview of this type of analysis and outline the various different preset study types available in the software for performing it. These include prestressed, modal, and reduced order studies. We then provide a brief introduction to prestressed analysis and discuss how in a prestressed structure there may be significant effects on the frequency response. We similarly provide an introduction to mode superposition and explain how it is useful for reducing computational time and resources, especially so for frequency domain analysis. Lastly, we conclude with a break down of the various different preset studies available. We cover the study steps included in each type of study listed below and explain what each step contributes to the analysis:
- Frequency Domain study
- Frequency Domain, Prestressed study
- Frequency Domain, Modal study
- Frequency Domain, Prestressed, Modal study
Demo: Modeling the Frequency Response of a Structure
Follow along in the software by opening the basic bracket model in the Application Libraries (found under Structural Mechanics Module > Tutorials) as we perform a frequency domain analysis and then a frequency domain prestress analysis of the same bracket tutorial model seen in previous parts of the course. The objective of this is to see the differences in the structural response of the bracket with and without prestress. In this step-by-step demonstration you will be guided through adding a prestress load, a harmonic load, and adding damping effects to the model before computing a Frequency Domain, Modal study and Frequency Domain, Prestressed study.
