Optical systems are often required to operate in harsh environments, such as at high altitude, in space, or underwater, where they are subjected to structural loads and extreme temperatures. In a similar way, optical devices used in high-power laser and nuclear applications are subjected to extreme conditions.

The most accurate way to predict the real-world performance of these devices is through numerical simulation using structural-thermal-optical performance (STOP) analysis — a quintessential multiphysics problem. COMSOL Multiphysics includes STOP analysis capabilities where thermal stress, structural deformation, and a temperature-dependent refractive index distribution can be fully coupled with optical ray trajectories. Fully capturing these physics is essential to understand high-power systems, such as systems used in laser-based manufacturing, and challenging operating environments.

In this webinar, we will discuss how ray-tracing simulation and structural and thermal analyses can be combined in COMSOL Multiphysics to form fully self-consistent STOP models.
