Tutorial model of an air-cooled battery energy storage system (BESS).

The model includes conjugate heat transfer with turbulent flow, fan curves, internal screens, and grilles. It features several interesting aspects:

  1. Fully parameterized geometry, which can be modified for different cell sizes, numbers of cells in each module, and number of modules in the cabinet.
  2. Use of fan curves from tabulated data, for example from fan manufacturers.
  3. Definition of flow resistance across external grilles and internal screens.
  4. The definition of heat sources due to battery losses.

A possible extension of the model would be to include the electrochemistry of the batteries in order to get a more accurate heat source due to electrochemical and ohmic losses.
