Electromagnetic Waves in Lossy Cold Magnetized Plasma

Application ID: 141091

A circularly polarized GHz wave is incident on a layer of cold magnetized plasma. Depending on the operating frequency and plasma state, the incident wave can excite a set of waves with different polarizations. The resulting reflection and transmission characteristics can be of interest for satellite communication applications.

From an RF perspective, cold magnetized plasma can be described as an anisotropic dielectric medium, with dielectric tensor components that depend on the external DC magnetic field and the electron density profile.

In COMSOL Multiphysics®, spatially varying plasma properties can be readily incorporated, the corresponding anisotropic dielectric medium can be specified, and the excited waves can be studied through the reflection and transmission spectra.
