Necking of an Elastoplastic Metal Bar

Application ID: 12607

A circular metal bar is subjected to uniaxial tension. As an effect, large plastic strains develop. The material is elastoplastic with nonlinear isotropic hardening. As the elongation is increased, the decrease in radius becomes strongly nonuniform, so called "necking". The development of the necking is studied, and the computed change in radius is in good agreement with results found in other literature. This example is a classical benchmark for large-strain plasticity.
