We use GPS measurements and Finite Element analysis to investigate strain accumulation in the interaction between active fronts of the Southern Alps and Dinarides at the northern edge of the Adriatic micro-plate. We develop a three dimensional model of the area taking into account the regional topography, approximating the crust as an elasto-plastic medium and reproducing as close as possible the orientation and the geometrical properties of the active fronts. Structural maps, cross sections, seismicity distribution and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) have been employed to better constrain the study area. The model is 40 km deep, 160 km wide and 150 km long. We validate our model against stress measurements from borehole breakouts and focal mechanisms inversion.
