Join us for an intensive introduction to using COMSOL Multiphysics® for modeling electromagnetic phenomena and devices in this online training course. Through 4 days of training, you will develop a strong foundation for your future electromagnetics and related multiphysics modeling needs.

The course starts at an introductory level, leading attendees through the essential steps needed in low-frequency electromagnetic simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics®. You will learn how to model devices such as inductors, capacitors, transformers, and motors. You shall be empowered to perform coupled FEM–circuit simulations, extraction of lumped parameters, electromagnetic heating, and other multiphysics analysis and use postprocessing to assess the performance of electromagnetic devices.

To teach this course, we use a combination of presentations, model demonstrations, guided hands-on training, self-guided exercises, and Q&A sessions. The goal is to immerse you in all of the main aspects of using COMSOL Multiphysics® and the relevant add-on modules so that you feel comfortable working with the software. By the end of the 4-day training course, you will know how to set up an electromagnetic model, choose the right boundary conditions, select appropriate mesh settings, and use the postprocessing for visualization and getting useful insights.


Day 1

Session 1

In the first session, we will introduce you to the AC/DC Module. Different electromagnetic devices and the physics interfaces relevant to them shall be discussed. We will cover how to model magnets, coils, and materials.

Session 2

Hands-on training for modeling capacitors, inductors, and extraction of lumped parameters.

Day 2

Session 1

Building onto the previous day, we will discuss meshing considerations from the perspective of electromagnetic phenomena. Use of symmetry and different ways of modeling high-aspect-ratio structures shall be covered. We will also cover how to couple external electric circuits with FEM models.

Session 2

Hands-on training for modeling transformers with circuit coupling.

Day 3

Session 1

This session introduces you to the Rotating Machinery Magnetic (RMM) interface that is made for modeling rotating electrical machines. We will cover how to model different aspects of rotating machines such as the coils, magnets, and rotating motion. Force and torque computation will be discussed extensively.

  • Introduction to the Rotating Machinery Magnetic (RMM) interface

Session 2

Hands-on training for modeling generators with external circuit coupling.

Day 4

Session 1

This session covers incorporating multiphysics aspects such as heat transfer, translation, and structural mechanics in your device simulations. We will take a look at modeling heating, different loss models, and boundary conditions for cooling. Structural coupling of electromagnetic devices shall be briefly discussed.

Session 2

Hands-on training for heat transfer analysis of motors.

Suggested Background

This course assumes some familiarity with the basic concepts of AC/DC modeling. The COMSOL Multiphysics® Intensive course is a recommended prerequisite.
