How to Work with the License Manager

How to Manage Idle Sessions

To encourage active use of the software and help ensure timely access for the users who need it, you may want to force idle licenses to be returned to the server. This administrative option is available for floating network, class kit, COMSOL Server™, and academic server licenses.

Once a user has been idle for the duration specified in the options file, their license is returned to the license manager and can be used by another user. Note that if a user is working in the COMSOL Desktop® UI or doing things like running a study or building a mesh, they are not counted as idle.

Setting a License Timeout

You can implement a timeout for all idle users on the license server via an options file with the following steps:

  1. Create a LMCOMSOL.opt file or open it from the license file directory on your server machine.
    ℹ️

To learn how to create an options file, see Part 2 of this course, "How to Administer Optimal COMSOL License Access with an Options File".

  2. In the options file, enter the line TIMEOUTALL 900 to set the timeout to occur after a minimum idle time of 900 seconds (15 minutes).
    • While 900 seconds is the minimum idle time, you can increase the time to better reflect your organization's typical use cases.
  3. Save the options file and restart the license manager for the timeout to take effect.

What Happens When a Timed-Out User Returns

When an idle user returns to their COMSOL session and starts working again, if the licenses are available at the time (i.e., have not already been checked out by another user), they will be checked out again to the original user. If any licenses needed are not available when the idle user returns, the user will be notified and prompted to save their model.
