Introduction to Battery Modeling

Modeling Batteries Across Different Scales and Chemistries

Using COMSOL Multiphysics with the add-on Battery Design Module, you can model various battery chemistries at different scales. Here, a general introduction to battery modeling is provided, including the different types of analyses you can conduct and best practices when setting up an electrochemical battery model.

Discussion & Demo: Modeling Batteries

We begin with an introduction to the Battery Design Module and the expanded capabilities and features it provides for conducting different types of analyses of batteries. This includes modeling batteries at the microscale, cell scale, lumped scale, and packed scale, for which we discuss the motivation for modeling using each type of scale. We then provide an overview of the different battery chemistries that you can model, including certain types that are available as predefined options as well as custom, user-defined options. This is followed by a discussion of the basics of building a battery model and important, relevant concepts, such as the State of Charge. The importance of using an iterative approach and incrementally building up model complexity is reiterated throughout.

A model demonstration is performed showing how to take the geometry of a 3D, heterogenous model of a battery and convert into a 1D, homogenous model.
