Platform: All Platforms Applies to: COMSOL Multiphysics®, COMSOL Server™ Versions: 5.4

Problem Description

When running COMSOL Multiphysics, COMSOL Server, or COMSOL Client in an Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) environment, some functionality may not work as expected unless you apply the software patches made available here.

Among the issues you may see are:

  • An error when connecting COMSOL Client to COMSOL Server using an IPv6 literal address
  • An error when launching an application from a web browser in COMSOL Client when connecting using an IPv6 literal address
  • An error when launching the Documentation in an IPv6 environment

Solution

Please make sure to have a IPv6-compatible web browser installed and apply the following patches to your COMSOL5.4 update 4 installation. Versions of COMSOL prior to 5.4 update 4 do not support IPv6. Versions after 5.4 update 4 will support IPv6 with a few exceptions including running certain LiveLink products for CAD software and downloading of the software. To install the software in an IPv6 environment, please contact your COMSOL representative for installation media on DVD format.

After applying the patches below, start COMSOL Server and COMSOL Multiphysics Server with the flag –ipv6 to activate listening for IPv6 connections.

Step 1: Ensuring that your COMSOL installation is fully updated to version 5.4 update 4 (build 5.4.0.388).

COMSOL Multiphysics

Start COMSOL Multiphysics and open the About COMSOL Multiphysics dialog box. It should state: COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4 (Build: 388). On Windows you will find About COMSOL Multiphysics under File > Help. On Linux and macOS you will find it under the Help menu.

COMSOL Server

Log onto your COMSOL Server. Scroll down to the bottom of the Application Library page and click About COMSOL Server. In the dialog box that appears it should state COMSOL Server 5.4 (Build: 388).

COMSOL Client

Open the Windows Control Panel and select Program and Features. Locate COMSOL Client in the list and verify that the Version-column states 5.4.0.388.

Step 2: Applying the patch

On Windows

COMSOL Multiphysics:
  • Download the file comsol_multiphysics_5.4u4p1_win64.zip.
  • Open the file in Windows explorer.
  • Extract the file to the COMSOL 5.4 installation directory. The default directory is C:\Program Files\COMSOL\COMSOL54\Multiphysics.
  • You need administrative privileges to extract.
  • You should get warnings for overwriting 9 files.
COMSOL Server:
  • Download the file comsol_server_5.4u4p1.zip.
  • Open the file in Windows explorer.
  • Extract the file to the COMSOL 5.4 installation directory. The default directory is C:\Program Files\COMSOL\COMSOL54\Server.
  • You need administrative privileges to extract.
  • You should get warnings for overwriting 6 files.
COMSOL Client:
  • Download the file comsol_client_5.4u4p1.zip.
  • Open the file in Windows explorer.
  • Extract the file to the COMSOL 5.4 installation directory. The default directory is C:\Program Files\COMSOL\COMSOL54\Client.
  • You need administrative privileges to extract.
  • You should get warnings for overwriting 3-4 files (depending on the original installation).

Linux:

COMSOL Multiphysics:
  • Download the file comsol_multiphysics_5.4u4p1_glnxa64_maci64.zip.
  • Issue the following commands from a terminal window, replacing any paths that may differ:
    cd /usr/local/comsol54/multiphysics sudo unzip <download directory>/ comsol_multiphysics_5.4u4p1_glnxa64_maci64.zip
  • You should get warnings for overwriting 6 files.
COMSOL Server:
  • Download the file comsol_server_5.4u4p1.zip.
  • Issue the following commands from a terminal window, replacing any paths that may differ:
    cd /usr/local/comsol54/server sudo unzip <download directory>/ comsol_server_5.4u4p1.zip
  • You should get warnings for overwriting 6 files.

macOS:

COMSOL Multiphysics:
  • Download the file comsol_multiphysics_5.4u4p1_glnxa64_maci64.zip.
  • Issue the following commands from a terminal window, replacing any paths that may differ:
    cd /Applications/COMSOL54/Multiphysics sudo unzip <download directory>/ comsol_multiphysics_5.4u4p1_glnxa64_maci64.zip
  • You should get warnings for overwriting 6 files.
COMSOL Server:
  • Download the file comsol_server_5.4u4p1.zip.
