Thread placement on >64 logical cores on Windows

Problem Description

On Windows computers with more than 64 logical cores (e.g. with more than 32 physical cores and Hyperthreading enabled as recommended) thread placement for COMSOL Multiphysics or COMSOL Server can be inefficient. You might observe this by inspecting the core utilization in the Task Manager or by means of longer run times than expected.

Solution

To improve the performance on Windows computers with more than 64 logical cores we recommend installing the provided hotfix (Windows only):

• Make sure that you have the latest version 5.5 Update 3 (Build 359) installed.

• If you run COMSOL Multiphysics 5.5 Update 3 with a CPU, NSL or CKL license or with an FNL license without cluster components installed (you have no comsolcluster.exe in the bin\win64 directory of your COMSOL installation directory), download the file comsol_5.5.0.359_win.exe (see the link below). You do not need the other two files in this case.

• If you run COMSOL Multiphysics 5.5 Update 3 with an FNL license with cluster components installed (you have comsolcluster.exe in the bin\win64 directory of your COMSOL installation directory), download the file comsol_5.5.0.359_cluster_win.exe (see the link below). You do not need the other two files in this case.

• If you run COMSOL Server 5.5 Update 3, download the file comsol_5.5.0.359_win_server.exe (see the link below). You do not need the other two files in this case.

• Double-click the downloaded executable in order to launch the installer and click Next in order to start the installation.

• On the Select Destination Folder tab, specify your current COMSOL installation directory, e.g. C:\Program Files\COMSOL\COMSOL55\Multiphysics or C:\Program Files\COMSOL\COMSOL55\Server. Click Next.

• Click Install and Close.
