Liquid-Cooled Battery Energy Storage System

Application ID: 119321

High-power battery energy storage systems (BESS) are often equipped with liquid-cooling systems to remove the heat generated by the batteries during operation. This tutorial demonstrates how to define and solve a high-fidelity model of a liquid-cooled BESS pack which consists of 8 battery modules, each consisting of 56 cells (14S4p).

The electrochemistry is modeled using the Battery Pack interface, which formulates the electrochemistry from battery data and automatically adds a heat source in the Heat Transfer in Solids and Fluids interface. The fluid flow in the cooling channels is modeled using the Turbulent Flow, Algebraic yPlus interface, which is coupled to the heat transfer interface with the Nonisothermal Flow coupling. The flow and heat transfer in the inlet and outlet pipes for the coolant is modeled with the Pipe Flow and Heat Transfer in Pipes interfaces.
