Tire Inflation

Application ID: 118091

This model showcases how to use fibers in thin layers to model thin anisotropic composites embedded in a solid without explicitly drawing either the layer of material or the reinforcing fibers. Here, it is used to model steel cords in tire belts that are used to provide structural support to the tire below the tread. Moreover, a curvilinear coordinate system is used to define the anisotropic material properties of the carcass ply.

The model also makes use of the “twist” degree of freedom in 2D axisymmetry to capture the azimuthal displacement induced by the orientation of the cords during inflation of the tire.
